Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease that is transmitted from person to person, caused by the etiological agent Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which primarily affects the lungs and can also affect other organs and systems. Approximately 10 million new cases and 1 million deaths are reported worldwide every year, and is therefore considered a major public health problem worldwide. In view of this, this study seeks to highlight how stigma and prejudice related to tuberculosis affect the diagnosis and treatment of the disease, as well as to describe strategies to address these paradigms. A review of the literature was carried out and, after using the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 19 articles were selected to compose this production. The stigmatization surrounding TB is generally related to the exaggerated concept of contagiousness and fear of infection. Therefore, due to the lack of information and understanding, people end up having false conclusions that TB is an incurable and highly contagious disease throughout the treatment course. However, to combat this social stigma and prejudice, it is necessary to promote health education, with the aim of creating means to demystify the stigma related to tuberculosis and promote strategies to encourage patients with the disease to start treatment and, mainly, to follow the treatment correctly, a fact that is crucial for the control and cure of the disease.
