Management methodologies in civil construction: a comparative study of traditional and agile models

Project management in the construction industry faces significant challenges related to project complexity, the involvement of multiple stakeholders, tight deadlines, and the need for strict resource control. Traditionally, structured methodologies such as the waterfall model and the PMBOK guide have been widely adopted in the sector. However, with the advancement of digital transformation and the growing demand for flexibility, agile methodologies have increasingly been adapted to the construction context. This article presents a narrative literature review aimed at comparing traditional and agile project management approaches, analyzing their characteristics, advantages, limitations, and potential for integration. The findings indicate a growing trend toward the adoption of hybrid models that combine control and adaptability, enabled by digital technologies such as BIM, BI dashboards, and collaborative platforms. It is concluded that the most effective methodological choice depends on project-specific conditions, organizational maturity, and the strategic goals of the company.
