Realistic simulation as a tool for assessing technical competence in the execution and interpretation of the papanicolau exam with nursing students at the university Center for Development of the Centro-Oeste Unidesc

Introduction: Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the female population worldwide, with approximately 530,000 new cases per year worldwide. Screening is carried out with the cytopathological examination, which contributes to reducing the incidence and mortality rates of the disease. The Pap smear is known worldwide as an effective prevention in reducing mortality from this type of cancer, however the quality of the cytopathological examination is a fundamental condition for guaranteeing the screening program. Aim: identify the main difficulties faced by students from the 6th nursing period at the Centro Universitário de Desenvolvimento do Centro-Oeste UNIDESC when performing and interpreting the Pap smear, using a realistic simulation as a method. Methodology: The realistic simulation was divided into three stages, the first being filling out the request for the cytopathological examination provided by the Ministry of Health in which we used observation as an evaluation tool; the second stage, the collection of cellular material, in which we apply observation as an evaluation tool; and the last stage, the interpretation of the result of a cytopathological examination, using a short questionnaire as an evaluation tool. Result: Based on the results obtained, it was observed the importance of improving the practical training of students. Conclusion: Therefore, we conclude that realistic simulation favors the improvement of nursing students, and it has proven to be a valuable instrument, as it facilitates the identification of points that require greater attention in the academic training of students, enabling targeted and efficient interventions.
