The importance of psychotherapy for mothers of atypical children

Abstract

This article highlights the importance of psychotherapy for mothers of children with neurodevelopmental disorders, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), a reality defined as "atypical motherhood". Based on professional experiences in a Psychology School-Service at a public  university, this qualitative experience report notes that these mothers face significant emotional overload, social isolation, high stress, and low self-esteem due to the intense demands of care.The well-being of these caregivers is crucial, as their physical and emotional exhaustion can directly affect the quality of care provided to their children. Psychotherapy emerges as an essential tool, offering a space for these women to be heard and cared for, helping to build self-confidence and coping strategies. Furthermore, psychoeducation within the therapeutic process provides valuable information about the child's condition, benefiting the entire family. The study concludes by emphasizing the need for social support and access to mental health services, advocating for public health policies that include psychological support for these mothers, thereby promoting a more inclusive approach for atypical families.
