Evaluation of Mothers’ Knowledge of Premature Infants Regarding the Importance of Exclusive Breastfeeding

Objective: assessing the knowledge of premature infants' mothers about breastfeeding in a public maternity hospital. Methods: descriptive, quantitative study using two instruments: sociodemographic and obstetric form and the KNOWL scale, which assess maternal breastfeeding knowledge. Results: evaluation carried out with 50 premature infants' mothers, in which satisfactory knowledge was obtained about the composition of breast milk, the benefits of colostrum and breastfeeding techniques. In addition, knowledge gaps and mistaken beliefs were identified, highlighting the need for actions to correct inadequate practices and promote adequate awareness. Conclusion: By applying the KNOWL scale to mothers, it was found out satisfactory knowledge in various areas related to exclusive breastfeeding in premature infants' mother from a public maternity hospital accredited by the Hospital Amigo da Criança's initiative.
