When My Body Dies Before Me: Understanding the Coping with Finitude in Cancer Patients under Exclusive Palliative Care

This study aimed to understand the coping strategies for finitude in cancer patients under exclusive palliative care, examining their relationship with the disease experience, death, and the subjective resources mobilized in this process. This quanti and qualitative mixed-methods research was conducted in a public hospital in the Federal District, Brazil, between May and July 2025, with six terminally ill cancer patients. Data were collected through a sociodemographic form, the Folkman and Lazarus Coping Strategies Inventory (1988), and semi-structured interviews analyzed using the Collective Subject Discourse technique. Results indicated that the main coping strategies were self-control, positive reappraisal, acceptance of responsibility, distancing, and social support, whereas confrontation and escape-avoidance were less frequent. Qualitative analysis revealed five central themes: faith, family and social support, physical and emotional suffering, resilience and overcoming, and hope. Faith emerged as a unanimous resource for re-signifying the proximity of death, while family and social support proved essential for participants’ dignity and comfort. The findings demonstrate that coping with cancer in exclusive palliative care transcends the biomedical dimension, integrating emotional, social, and spiritual aspects. It is concluded that spirituality, support networks, and resilience are fundamental pillars in facing finitude, highlighting the need for multiprofessional practices guided by a biopsychosocial-spiritual approach.
