Nursing care for children with acute lymphoid leukemia: a humanized approach in the pediatric oncological context

Abstract

The nurse plays the main role in approaching the care provided to cancer patients, including prevention, diagnosis, treatment and palliative care, where humanization of care is essential. Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia -  ALL is a disease caused by the multiplication of immature cells of lymphoid origin (LEITE, et al., 2017). The diagnosis of the disease is sometimes devastating, so the nursing team must be sufficiently prepared to deal not only with physical issues, but also with emotional issues (GONÇALVES, et al., 2019). The main objective is to identify what nursing care is required for pediatric cancer patients with ALL. According to studies, nursing plays a crucial role in creating a welcoming environment, in empathetic communication, and in implementing strategies that reduce the stress of hospitalization (NASCIMENTO, et al., 2023). The professional role of nursing in pediatric oncology is to promote quality of life, ensuring that, even during treatment, children have access to recreational and social activities that respect their limitations and that give them confidence in the care provided. By building a bond of trust with parents and guardians, the nursing team helps to reduce anxiety and create a more serene environment for dealing with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (SAMPAIO, et al., 2021).
