Multidisciplinary treatment of obesity: An analysis of the relationship between sarcopenic obesity, antiobesity medication use, and lifestyle in a specialized unit in the Federal District (Brazil)

Introduction: Sarcopenic obesity is a complex clinical condition characterized by the association of excess adiposity with reduced muscle mass and function, negatively impacting functionality and quality of life. Methods: This is an observational, analytical, longitudinal, and retrospective study based on the analysis of medical records from 70 patients undergoing multidisciplinary treatment for obesity, for at least a year, between 2023 and 2025. Data regarding bioimpedance, food frequency, and the EUROHIS-QOL 8-item questionnaire were utilized. Results and Discussion: The sample was predominantly female (88.6%). The prevalence of sarcopenic obesity decreased from 87.3% to 54.5% by the end of the follow-up period. Body composition improved, with fat mass decreasing by 8.6% and lean mass increasing, on average, by 2.3%. Diet quality directly impacted weight: patients with an adequate diet showed a weight loss of 4.6%, while those with an inadequate diet experienced a weight gain of 2.3%. Physical activity was a significant factor in improving body composition, being directly associated with lean mass gain and a greater magnitude of weight loss in active individuals. Medication use increased from 64.3% to 77.6% of patients; however, weight loss was similar between users (3.3%) and non-users (3.1%). Quality of life improved in all dimensions initially, maintaining gains in health perception and energy levels in the long term. Conclusion: Multidisciplinary treatment proved effective in improving body composition. Diet quality directly influenced weight loss, whereas pharmacotherapy alone did not ensure superior weight reduction, reinforcing the importance of behavioral changes.
