The role of the psychologist in cases of domestic violence: a narrative review

Abstract

Domestic violence is a serious public health issue and a violation of human rights, with significant impacts on victims’ physical and mental health. This study aims to analyze, through a narrative literature review, the role of psychologists in addressing domestic violence, with emphasis on clinical, forensic, and preventive practices. The research was conducted based on bibliographic and documentary sources, including legislation, scientific articles, and official guidelines. The findings indicate that psychologists play a fundamental role in supporting victims, promoting emotional recovery, and developing coping strategies to break the cycle of violence. In addition, forensic psychological practice is highlighted as essential in producing expert reports that support judicial decision-making. Psychological interventions with perpetrators are also relevant, particularly through psychoeducational approaches aimed at accountability and behavioral change. However, significant challenges were identified, such as insufficient public policies, precarious service structures, and the need for continuous professional training. It is concluded that psychological practice is essential in preventing and addressing domestic violence, requiring a multidisciplinary approach and the strengthening of support networks to ensure comprehensive and effective care.
