Abstract

Objective: This study aims to evaluate the effect of curative chemotherapy on nutritional status and gastrointestinal symptoms in adult and elderly patients. Method: This is a cross-sectional observational study, with data collection carried out from January to May 2025 at the Hospital de Base do Distrito Federal. An anamnesis was applied using a specific form, the NRS-2002 screening tool was used, and the ASG-PPP tool was used to assess nutritional status and gastrointestinal symptoms. Results: Information was collected from 85 people, of whom 90.5% (n=77) presented some weight loss, ranging from moderate to severe. Individuals were classified into groups A, B, and C, being respectively well-nourished, moderately malnourished, and severely malnourished. In group C, there was greater weight loss (22.5 kg ± 9.8), as well as lower values for calf and arm circumference. Thirteen symptoms were evaluated in patients undergoing chemotherapy, with the highest prevalence of hyporexia (54%; n=47), nausea (50%; n=43), dysgeusia (37%; n=32), and xerostomia (37%; n=32). The presence of symptoms was higher in group C, the severely malnourished. Conclusion: Most individuals presented severe weight loss, placing them at nutritional risk. The most prevalent symptoms were hyporexia, nausea, dysgeusia, and xerostomia. Individuals classified as severely malnourished presented greater weight loss, greater muscle mass depletion, lower circumference values, and a greater association with the symptoms when compared to the other groups.
