The Role of Nursing and Educational Actions in the Prevention of Self-Medication

Self-medication is characterized by the use of medicines without medical prescription or professional supervision, a common practice in contemporary society, favored by the wide availability of drugs, media influence, ease of access, and lack of adequate guidance. This behavior represents a significant public health risk, as it contributes to drug intoxications, adverse reactions, harmful interactions, and increased bacterial resistance. In Brazil, where medicine consumption is high, weak regulatory control intensifies the problem, highlighting the need for educational strategies to promote the rational use of medicines. In this context, nursing plays a strategic role, especially due to its proximity to the community and its involvement in educational actions aimed at raising awareness among the population. This study was developed through a qualitative and descriptive literature review, considering scientific publications and official documents published between 2019 and 2025. It is concluded that health education carried out by nurses is essential in addressing self-medication, contributing to the prevention of health problems, the promotion of safety, and the improvement of population quality of life.
