Knowledge of the Nursing Team regarding Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

Objective: To analyze the nursing staff's knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in adults using Basic Life Support (BLS) with an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in the hospital setting of two hospitals in the Federal District, HRL and HRC. Method: This is a cross-sectional exploratory study with a quantitative approach, conducted through field research. The convenience sample consisted of 62 professionals, including nurses and nursing technicians, who worked in the emergency rooms of two hospitals in the Federal District. Data collection used a validated semi-structured questionnaire based on the guidelines of the American Heart Association. Results: The results showed that the average total percentage of correct answers in the sample was 58.39%. A statistically significant difference in knowledge was identified between the categories, with nurses showing a higher average percentage of correct answers than nursing technicians. Professionals with postgraduate degrees demonstrated higher scores compared to those with only technical education. Furthermore, participants with a weekly workload of up to 20 hours obtained better overall performance and in the thematic block on AEDs compared to those with more than 40 hours. Conclusion: The study concluded that the assessment of the nursing team's knowledge highlights the need for continuous professional development regarding cardiopulmonary arrest. Continuing education is a crucial tool for promoting improved care for victims of in-hospital cardiac arrest, ensuring effective and high-quality care through the improvement and study of protocols.
