Hospital Playroom and its Effects on the Humanization of Care for Hospitalized Children: An Integrative Review

Objective: To analyze the effects of the hospital playroom on the hospitalization process and the physical and emotional recovery of hospitalized children. Method: This is an integrative literature review conducted in the SciELO, LILACS, and PubMed databases in April 2026. The search strategy grouped descriptors (DeCS/MeSH) and free text terms into three main axes: population (e.g., "Child, Hospitalized", "pediatric"), intervention (e.g., "Play Therapy", "hospital playroom"), and outcome (e.g., "Patient-Centered Care", "anxiety"), strictly combined using the Boolean operators AND and OR. Original studies published between 2016 and 2026, available in full text and related to the theme, were included. The study selection followed the PRISMA protocol guidelines. Results: After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, removing duplicates, and screening titles and abstracts, 31 studies were selected for full-text reading. From this stage, 13 were excluded, leaving 18 studies that composed the final sample. Discussion: The playroom reduces anxiety, fear, and suffering, favoring the child's adaptation, the maintenance of child development, and the strengthening of bonds with the healthcare team and family members, although the practice still encounters limitations regarding infrastructure and professional training. Conclusion: Play activities are configured as effective therapeutic strategies, being essential for the humanization of pediatric care and the promotion of the physical, emotional, and social well-being of hospitalized children.
