Denying artificial intelligence today is like defending the typewriter in the age of computers

This study investigated the reasons behind the cultural and institutional resistance to the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI), using the defense of the typewriter in the computer age as a metaphor—a classic symbol of rejection toward technological innovations. The central question aimed to understand to what extent current resistances to AI replicate historical patterns of rejection of innovation. The research was based on an integrative and descriptive review of national and international literature, which identified four major categories of resistance: identity threat, organizational resistance, loss of human skills, and ethical-political barriers. The findings indicate that resistance to AI goes beyond technical aspects, being rooted in psychological, cultural, and institutional dimensions. The typewriter metaphor illustrates how new technologies generate tensions with traditional practices in fields such as education, labor, and knowledge production. It is concluded that understanding these resistances is essential for the development of more conscious educational policies and organizational strategies aligned with the challenges and opportunities of AI.
