Abstract

Introduction: The inflammatory condition affecting the pancreas is known as pancreatitis. It is characterized as a phlogistic process that includes the presence of inflammatory infiltrate, fibrosis, and loss of pancreatic glandular tissue. The acute form has known causes such as gallstones, alcohol, medications, and ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography), and it presents with acute epigastric pain, nausea and vomiting. This pathology has shown a rising incidence not only in the adult and elderly populations but also among children. This increase is attributed to greater awareness and improved diagnostic capabilities. However, despite advances in diagnostic and interventional methods, the disease remains associated with significant morbidity and mortality. This study addresses factors contributing to such aggravation. Objective: To evaluate the morbidity associated with the disease in Brazil between the years 2021 and 2024, based on data provided by DATASUS. Methodology: This is a cross-sectional ecological study that analyzed hospitalization and morbidity rates due to acute pancreatitis in Brazil across all its macro-regions. Data were obtained from the following databases: SINAN (Information System for Notifiable Diseases) and SIM (Mortality Information System), made available by the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System (DATASUS). Results: According to the data obtained from DATASUS, there were 149,164 hospitalizations due to acute pancreatitis between 2021 and 2024. The Southeast region recorded the highest number of deaths, followed by the South and Northeast. The data also indicate that men exhibited higher mortality rates than women across all regions. Conclusion: Acute pancreatitis is a condition with significant hospitalization rates and can be considered a public health issue in Brazil. Efficient performance by the multidisciplinary healthcare team is essential to reduce complications and save lives.
