The oncologist's role in dealing with the feelings of patients and their families during cancer treatment

This study, based on a systematic review of the literature, analyzed the role of oncologists in managing the feelings of patients and their families during cancer treatment. Cancer is a disease of great relevance to public health, associated with high morbidity and mortality rates, and triggers conflicting feelings in individuals, such as fear of death, anxiety, and hopelessness. The research adopted the PRISMA 2020 protocol and analyzed 17 studies, identifying that the role of oncologists goes beyond purely clinical care, assuming an essential role in mediating emotional, social, and family dimensions. A comprehensive and humanized approach is an essential condition of contemporary oncology practice, requiring the integration of technical competence with ethical and human sensitivity. Evidence shows that empathy, active listening, and therapeutic communication are indispensable tools, as they strengthen the doctor-patient bond, contribute to treatment adherence, and promote psychosocial well-being. In addition, care should extend to the family, who experience the process of illness in an intense and exhausting way, requiring support and guidance. Despite the global movement toward humanization, there are still challenges related to professional training and the need for continuous education in communication and palliative care. It can be concluded that strengthening these humanized and ethical practices is a central pillar of current cancer care.
