The role of the nurse in building the emotional bond between parents and newborns in a neonatal ICU: a literature review

Objective: To analyze the role of nurses in supporting the formation of an affective bond between parents and neonates in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU), highlighting their management and nursing care practices. Method: This is a literature review that critically collected and analyzed scientific articles published between 2021 and 2025 in databases such as SciELO, PubMed, Google Scholar, and the Virtual Health Library (VHL). In addition to articles, normative and official documents were consulted, such as the Brazilian National Humanization Policy (PNH), Ministry of Health ordinances regulating the Kangaroo Method, the Child and Adolescent Statute (ECA), and recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO), in order to contextualize scientific evidence within national and international guidelines. Results: The reviewed studies indicate that hospitalization in NICU, although essential for neonatal survival, may weaken affective bonding and generate insecurity in parents. The nurse’s role proved fundamental in minimizing this impact, promoting humanized practices that encourage family closeness with the neonate. Strategies such as the Kangaroo Method, skin-to-skin contact, and the Family Integrated Care (mFICare) model stood out as effective interventions, providing physical, emotional, and cognitive benefits for both the newborn and family members. Furthermore, the educational and emotional support provided by nurses contributed to parental autonomy in neonatal care and reduced the anxiety and stress experienced during hospitalization. Conclusion: The findings highlight that a sensitive and humanized nursing approach is indispensable for strengthening the bond between parents and neonates in NICU. Proper management, combined with evidence-based practices and supported by normative frameworks, reinforces the nurse’s role as a mediator of care and a key agent in the humanization of neonatal assistance.
